Posting a picture with Live Writer

Here’s a picture that I took while backpacking in Montana, Glacier National Park. On this trail, the mountain goats were used to seeing the hikers and were not too shy. Here’s a little kid:

Same picture -- this one has been modified using the Polaroid plug-in.

Windows Live Writer used on this post!

Woah! All the tools, Social Networking and others, that are available tends to be overwhelming! One of the FREE tools offered by Microsoft Live is Live Writer that I’m presently using to make this post.
  • Nice interface.
  • Easy editing with dynamic spell-check.
  • Nice set of tools – see picture.

Much better tool for editing a post than provided by host blogger.com.

BlackBerry Camera is Soft -- Bigtime.

Look at the last post. Seems every picture that I take with the BB is soft -- really soft. Turned IS back on. Decreased image resolution to 1024x768. I'll try to use solid objects to steady my hand while taking a picture and see if I can improve imaging taking in good light.

Fall Color on the Farm

Shot with the BlackBerry again. No EXIF data that I can find. I miss the 100% viewfinder of my D300. I did not intend to show the asphalt in the foreground.

I like the rendition of the colors, but click on the image link to view the full-size image -- it's soft -- even in the good light! Not good. I'm going to turn off the Image Stabilization (IS). Can't hurt.

New Gear from Nikon

Nikon announced a new 85mm AF-S DX F/3.5 Macro lens. I don't need it as I have the Nikon 105mm F/2.8 macro lens, which is full-frame and has a longer working distance. Who knows? Perhaps I'll have a full-frame camera someday, and I'll have to replace my DX lenses. (Hmm, how many is that? A Tokina 12-24 F/4 DX, Nikon 18-70 F/3.5-4.5 DX, and a new Nikon 35mm F/1.8 DX. I think that's it. My best lenses are Nikon FX, full-frame: 70-200, 80-400, 28-70, 70-300, and a number of prime lenses.)

Speaking of full-frame, Nikon also announced the new Nikon D3s. At $5100, it's too rich for my blood. Don't need it for what I do. My Nikon D300 is still plenty of camera for me. The new Nikon D300s does not attempt me either. Its video capabilities still need to be improved before it temps me.

NCCC Alphabet Challenge -- 7 so far

Here are my letters so far, seven of them. What think ye?

Video from BlackBerry

Not sure if Blogger supports video anymore; it is not on the edit menu. Also wondering if this Quicktime format is supported. Absence or presence of a video at the Diner this morning will be my answer.

Alas, it did not make it. Blogger does not support videos anymore. I guess they assume that YouTube will be used and embed it from there.

Summer's End

On a bike ride, my wife pointed out this tire and tree. Fall leaves mark the end of summer.

The picture is soft -- taken again with the BlackBerry, hand-held. The camera needs bright light for a sharp picture. Image Stabilization didn't seem to help. I wonder how my little point and shoot would have worked.

Rockwell Tower Glowing

NOT a great picture today -- used my BlackBerry camera -- but the scene was beautiful. The rising sun had lit up Rockwell Hall Tower for just a few seconds. I snapped a shot from a colleague's window and emailed it to the blog.

I had already turned on the Image Stabilization in the camera, and I tried to steady the camera on the window frame. The picture still looks fuzzy, and I needed longer glass! :-(

BlackBerry Tour Camera

Here's a pic of my 1911. The BB camera is a 3.2 megapixel with IS, WB, "flash," but as you can see here, the auto WB is not too good. The convenience is great, however!

Fall Colors on a Country Road

Drove to Potter’s Falls today, near Kennerdel. Took this shot through my truck’s front window. Nikon D300, Nikkor 35mm AF-S F/1.8 lens, ISO-200, f/5 for 1/160 sec. Matrix metering; Program mode. Untouched in software other than to compress it for the Web.

Just liked the look of the road, so I shot it. Emailed this posting from my Tablet PC in Outlook.

Steelers Game versus San Diego

Four of us attended this October 4 game which started at 8:20 PM. It was a late night, but a great one. Took the Pentax Optio W10 point and shoot, but some of the shots were fuzzy due to poor focus; some were fuzzy due to focusing on something in the background and not my subject. Maybe I'll take my D300 next time for some better shots ---- NOT!

Snapshots with the new 35mm AF-S f/1.8 Nikkor

Here's a shot at school, Nikon D300, aperture-priority at f/1.8 to see bokeh, auto-ISO. Shutter speed was 1/1600. Nice soft background.

Here's a snap of my house using my D300 (vivid +3, Program, Auto ISO) using my new Nikkor DX 35mm AF-S 1:1.8 G lens. 1/60 sec @ f/2.8.
Perhaps a bit too saturated on the pumpkins, but that's not the lens' fault.

Nikon 35mm AF-S F/1.8 DX lens

Hey! I bought one from B&H and it arrived yesterday. Image is from dpreview.com, a good introduction to the lens' announcement.
At a glance I can see that I'm going to like its small size, fast focus, and bright view on my D300.

The lens is touted as the DX normal lens (35mm x 1.5 = 52.5), but it looks a little wider than what my eye sees when comparing the view to my 100% D300. Am I wrong here?

I'll take a few serious images and post them here in the blog.
In the meantime, check out http://fredjennyphotography.com/

McConnells Mill in the Fog

This shot has fond memories. My Dad and I got up early one morning and took some shots of the mill in the fog. This is a scanned slide, probably taken with my Nikon N80. Don't remember the slide film, although I liked Velvia.

Double Exposure - Blue Moon

This image in contrast to my last post, was taken later in the evening. That's NOT the reason for the blue cast. When I shot the double exposure in the last posting, the moon was in a fairly light sky -- thus it did not overwhelm the island view on which I placed it.

In this picture, later at night, I photographed the moon in a much darker, blue night -- thus overlaying it gave me this blue-appearing image.

I like both pictures generally. I learned about using the D300 for double exposures.

Double Exposure

The moon was out near dusk; phase as seen above. Shot this as a double exposure, RAW, in my Nikon D300. It does all the thinking on its own, and other than my shot of the moon with too long a focal length, I think that it did OK.

Surf -- with or without waves

Shot these a while ago at Myrtle Beach. I was using a tripod, my Nikon D200, and a Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 lens. The first shot I just stopped opened up to f/2.8 to see what I'd get. You can see the result -- the EXIF data follows.
Here I wanted a smooth, silky surf, so I stopped down to f/32. Note how smooth the water is with the long 9 second exposure. I'll have to try it with a neutral density filter.

More Barns not making the Competition Cut

In both of these pictures, the barns were not significant (central to the composition) to suit my tastes: In the image above, I like the leading lines of the road taking you back to view the barn. (Note the tracks of the Amish buggy.) But the sky is drab -- not doing anything to add punch to the picture. The tree is pretty prominent as well.

I like the layers of the above image with the goats in the foreground, the stream meandering throughout, but the barn's view is obscured somewhat by the foliage. I can (& did) better, IMHO.
Shot both of these May 24, 2009, north of Lancaster, PA, on a road trip from Philly. Nikon D300, Nikkor 24-70 AF-S F/2.8 lens.

Barn off US 19, not used for competition

This barn is located off of US 19 north of Zelionople. I shot it near sunset, handheld. I adjusted it in Camera Raw and used the High Pass Filter & procedure to sharpen it. June competition for New Castle Camera Club is barns. Won't be using this shot, obviously. Shot with Nikon D300 and Nikkor 35-70 AF f/2.8 lens @38mm, 1/80 sec. @ F/4.2. ISO 1600, -0.7 exposure compensation.

Ascending to Breakneck Bridge

I had found Breakneck Falls and was preparing to photograph the falls when a father and son appeared on the bridge. The son was rappelling down from the side of the bridge and then ascending also using ropes and knots. The father asked me to take some shots -- which I did. These two shots were of the ascent, taken from a distance using my D300 and my Nikkor AF-S VR lens. The climber was brightly back lit, thus silhouetted. So, in Photoshop Elements 6, I adjusted the exposure using Levels, but then applied the "Paint Daubs" filter in the first image.
The second image here has had the "Fresco" filter applied.
More images of the climber can be found at http://fredjennyphotography.com/climber

Base of Alpha Falls

Here are the base rocks of Alpha Falls, McConnell's Mill State Park. For some unknown reason I shot 1600 ISO. I used 0.6 ND Filter and Moose Warm Polarizer. Doh!

Anyway, there was direct sunlight on the falls in the afternoon, 4 PM or so -- not the best of conditions. BUT I discovered Breakneck Falls. More on that later.

SEO book acquisition

Just bought a book from Amazon.com on search engine optimization (SEO) by Kristopher B. Jones (hyperlink takes you to the book -- check the table of contents.) As I learn more about SEO by reading the book, I'll post some tips here on marketing my photography Website, http://fredjennyphotography.com. There are many other excellent Web resources on Web 2.0 and small business. I'll share those as well as I have time to examine them.

As I read the descriptions and reviews about SEO books on Amazon, this one seem to be the meatiest, but not necessarily for the programmer. We'll see.

Fuel and Fuddle in Oakland on Meyran

If you're in Oakland, try Fuel and Fuddle on Meyran, just off of Forbes Avenue. Great place to eat -- excellent salads and great suds!

Took this with Nikon D300, the Nikkor 24-70 AF-S f/2.8 lens at 70mm, ISO 200, center-weighted metering because of the bright sky, f/9 for 1/320 sec., exposure compensation of -0.7. I had left on Tungsten White Balance after being indoors at the Cathedral of Learning, so I had to remove a blue cast before posting.

Blogger does NOT like an ampersand in the filename of the picture!

Changed my Blog domain with Eclipse

For your information, I changed my blog site from "FarleysFotoBlog" to "FredJennyPhotography."
We had an eclipse back February 20, 2008, and here is a composite of the full moon and the eclipse. I shot this with my Nikon D200 and my Nikkor 80-400mm AF-VR lens racked out to 400mm, ISO 400 on my CF tripod, F/9 for 1/320 sec. I spot-metered on the moon. Spotted the two separate images together in Photoshop Elements 6.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED

Used this StoboFrame bracket at an event the other night. It was my Dad's. I like it. It moves easily from landscape to portrait mode, locking in either mode. Very handy. Image from http://amazon.com/
Purchased the Nikkor 24-70mm AF-S F/2.8G lens a short while ago. Worth every penny. Shot a retirement party: Nikon D300, MB-D10 battery pack, SB-800 flash, this lens, on a StrobaFrame flash frame. The system performed like a champ. 150 images, only needed to adjust one -- that was a flash shot the large, empty, banquet room that needed some lightening.

Flip Mino pocket camcorder

Here's a picture of the Flip Mino, an all-digital pocket-sized camcorder.

My wife gave me a Flip Mino pocket camcorder for my BD. Tried to upload a 1 minute video; it was 640x480 AVI MPEG4 file in its original format. Waited all night and still not uploaded, a 30 MB file. Check the technical data on the device. That's cool.
I'll try again from a faster link.

Apple Blossom Time

I've replaced my Nikkor 35-70 AF f/2.8 lens (need to sell on Ebay) with the faster focusing Nikkor 24-70 AF-S f/2.8 lens that also gives me wider range. Below are a couple of shots of backyard apple blossoms, lens wide open at f/2.8. Bokeh is very pleasing. The AF-S focuses in a heartbeat. The heft of the lens reminds me that I've paid for ED lens components in a professional build. So far so good.
